Church Leadership 2024

 Pastor Luke Thomson


Luke Thomson is a life-long United Methodist who grew up in the church at Christ UMC in Plano.  He felt the call to ministry early in life, but moved away from that goal by the time he began college.  As a Political Science major at Texas A&M, he found himself drawn to involvement in the Wesley Foundation on campus.  Working with them, he was able to explore his call to ministry through working in outreach, leading Freshman Bible Study, preaching at Wednesday services, and serving on the Conference Campus ministry board.


Luke is a Certified Local Pastor and has just completed his final year of seminary at SMU Perkins.


From 2021 to 2023, Luke served as Associate Youth Pastor at Christ UMC, where he and his wife, Obrei, have been very active.  While at FUMC Frisco, Luke will have the opportunity to continue to collaborate with CUMC Senior Pastor Chris Dowd and will be mentored and coached by our outgoing interim, Rev. Don Underwood.

In February 2023, First UMC Frisco adopted a Simplified Accountable Structure (SAS), following paragraph 247.2 of the 2016 Book of Discipline.  The SAS is an organizational structure of church governance that provides clear decision making while simplifying the structure of church governance.


Governance and oversight responsibilities of the Church Council, Finance Committee, Trustees, and Staff Parish Relations are combined into a single 12-member Leadership Board, with the responsibility of providing leadership, oversight, and governance for the church in the areas of Stewardship, Forward Vision, Strategic Planning, and Accountable Leadership.


The SAS model allows decisions to made more quickly with fewer (often redundant) meetings and less red tape.  The end result is that the congregation can place their focus on the actual ministries and missions of the church and  on the ultimate goal of making disciples of Jesus Christ.
