I think all Christians can agree God has a purpose(s) for our lives. We often talk about this in terms of God’s will. But what is God’s will? Sometimes we think about it like the “narrow road” in scripture and might even call it God’s plan, singular. We worry if we mess up a little, we screw up God’s plan for us. Or we might view God’s will like a tree branch with lots of option and paths as we grow, but moving in the same general direction. More flexibility, but less clarity.
I tend toward the second view, but that’s still not quite how I think we engage with God’s will. I look at the prophet Micah teaching us to “love mercy, act justly, and walk humbly with God.” I hear Jesus saying, “The greatest commandment is to love God and love your neighbor.” I think God’s purpose for us is to joyfully live up to those commandments. I think the specifics are often up to us, and the good news is, there’s no way we can screw up God’s will.
Wherever you are in your journey of faith, God has a purpose for you; grow in love of God and neighbor. The challenge for us is to act on the purpose God puts before us.
May we do so with joy this week.
See you Sunday,
Pastor Luke
