When was the last time you laughed really hard? For me, it was watching the new Naked Gun movie a couple of weeks ago. After all that laughter, the day seemed brighter. A doctor could probably explain the science behind it, but we intuitively know there is some truth in laughter being the best medicine.
One of my devotional readings this week was about jokes. It recast God as the ultimate comedian and found laughter in some of our faith’s most reverent moments. What is Christ’s resurrection, if not the ultimate joke at death’s expense? Evil thought God’s goodness was over? Think again. Jokes are built on subverting our expectations and offering something better. God constantly does the same for us.
A laugh is a simple thing, but how often do we find God’s healing in it?
