09.05.25 – Old Churches

One of the questions we did not get to at the Q&A this last Sunday was about the church’s old building on 6th and Oak, before the Preston Road location. The question asked if I had ever seen inside. I had not, but I did go on a virtual tour on Zillow.

If I had been inside, I suspect I would have the same feeling I usually have standing in old churches. It feels like standing on holy ground. I love visiting old church buildings because of that sacred feeling. Generations of people, fragile and fallible but still faithful, tried to love like Jesus in those old buildings. My personal favorite is probably the United Methodist Church in Orange Texas, which felt to me a bit like a castle.

I am admittedly a bit skeptical about physical places being sacred because God is everywhere. Yet there are certainly physical places where we have an easier time hearing God. Sometimes it’s in an old church. This week for me it was standing on the back patio as the wind tossed the leaves. Maybe for you it’s around a dinner, high on a mountain, or on a comfortable couch. In our hope to encounter God in ever deeper ways, may we seek those places we feel God close to us.

See you Sunday!
