08.01.25 – Alaska (Part 2): Like a Little Child

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 18:1-4

—————–

Biblical authors vary widely in their portrayal of children. In some places, children are immature and used as negative examples. We should grow and mature in our faith, not remain stagnant in an infantile state. Certainly, Jesus wants us to grow in our faith, but Jesus also calls us to be like children in the best ways. Yes, children can be immature, but they can also be insightful, and fearless in sharing that insight.

One day on the cruise, surrounded by some of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen, I heard a child tell off their parents. “Stop taking pictures! Live in the experience.”

Pictures have value, but yes, we should appreciate the moments God gives us. A picture isn’t the real thing after all. The parents glared at the child, but to their credit their faces softened, and the phones went away. Inside, I said, “Amen,” and decided to take Jesus’ advice to listen to the wisdom of children.
