05.02.2025: Flies

Obrei and my apartment is under attack. Flies have been relentlessly invading for the past two days. I don’t know what type of fly these are, but they are big and nasty. We’re in a terrible arms race. As we get better at killing them, more of them come in. Where are they coming from? We have no idea; we’ve checked everything we can think of. Nothing seems to stop them. Maybe pest control will. I still envision a day I can sit in our apartment and not hear a buzz zoom past my ear. I still have hope for a fly-less future.

This may sound like a stretch to reach something spiritual, and maybe it is, but I think trivial experiences like this can be like training wheels for the real deal. Each time I swat a fly into oblivion and two more appear, I can despair of ever having a buzz free moment again. Or I can choose to hope we will deal with these flies and keep on swatting. With the right attitude and attention, every trivial experience, even the most unpleasant, can build the hope muscles we need to persevere through the big things in life.

See you Sunday!
